Seville

Seville was by far my favorite city on this trip making it my second favorite city in Spain. Barcelona is my favorite, but many things about BCN are not very Spanish at all (I´ve come to this conclusion after seeing more of Spain...BCN is much more French). Anyway, when I think of what Spanish architecture is and what a Spanish city looks like, Seville comes to mind. The ornamentation, the bright colors, the tropical climate; all these things make me think of Spain. Also, I probably think of this particualr style of architecture as Spanish because Seville is a sister city to Kansas City (my home city) and we have an entire shopping district, the "Country Club District", (built in the 1920s) which was modeled after Seville (complete with the Giralda Tower, pictured above). Anyway, more on that later.

The Modern train station in Seville where we arrived after a 3 hour trip from Granada.

Seville has an old town section just like all the other cities we visited. However, as in each of the other towns, Seville´s was a little different. This is a picture of part of old town and the bullfighting ring as seen from the top of Giralda Tower.
This is a square in front of the cathedral with a very cool light fixture that doubles as a fountain. We actually have a copy of this in Kansas City...it was very cool but kinda weird to see the real one.A very unique building in Seville´s downtown. Its a strange mix of Muslim, Spanish, and typical 1880s city architecture.Seville has two main attractions, right next to one another. The Cathedral of Seville (complete with the Giralda tower) and the Alcazar, an old palace with extensive gardens. The cathedral is pictured below.

The orange grove court in front of the cathedral reminded me of the court at the Great Mosque. They have so many oranges in southern Spain, its crazy...Ill be happy if i never see an orange again! The Alcazar was really awesome. However, after seeing the Alhambra I was a little jaded and it didn´t seem quite as awesome as it really was. The Ceiling of one of the grand rooms in the palace.
Another shot of the gardens
The Giralda Tower, viewed from the gardens

The rest of the city was jam packed with mosaic domes, decorative tile work, and bright stucco.

A beautiful mansion on one of Seville´s main avenues.
A very nice hotel embodying what i call the true ¨Seville style¨

A beautiful church i discovered when wondering around

A very interesting dome-Sister cities-
So Kansas City models what is arguably the most beautiful part of our city after Seville, and what do they pay us back with? An ugly street full of some of the most disgusting high rises in Seville. I mean come on guys, couldn't you have atleast made them beautiful art deco structures mimicking Kansas City´s own style? Oh well...at least we got something right?
